Costume Institute of the Metropolitan Museum of Art
   Located in New York City, the Costume Institute began in 1937 as the Museum of Costume Art. With the assistance of the fashion industry, in 1946, the Museum merged with the Metropolitan Museum of Art. It was in 1959 that the Costume Institute became its own department. Diana Vreeland played a significant role in setting the standards for the outstanding costume exhibitions that the Costume Institute is known for. It boasts of more than 5,000 square feet of space, more than 80,000 costumes and accessories, and a state-of-the-art conservation laboratory.
